Communicating without wearing yourself out

Although the first month of 2024 is already behind us, it is never too late to make belated resolutions! You want to focus your energy on things that matter, like taking time for yourself, cooking, exercising, or reducing the performance pressure without jeopardizing the communications success of your organization? No problem, here are five simple tips that will help you put your efforts in the right places.

1. Reuse your content again and again

The news world moves fast. If you want to have resonance, the key word is « repetition, » as in repetition of the same content. Did you get coverage in a media outlet? Don’t settle for sharing it once on your social media channels; turn it into several different pieces of content. Repurpose it as a blog article, make it a story or reel (or several). A few days later, adapt your news into a carousel for Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, pick it up again in your next newsletter, talk about it in a short video, and when the topic resurfaces in the news months later, reshare your story. The possibilities are endless; it’s simply a reflex to develop!

2. Prioritize regional media

Getting visibility in the media can be a major challenge, especially in national outlets that are, for all intents and purposes, saturated. Yet every region of Quebec has several media outlets that can give you visibility, let people talk about you without being lost in an endless stream of news, and sometimes even help you climb to national coverage. Not to mention the fact that you can make new friends who are eager for fresh, interesting content. Because yes, regional media do not only cover regional news. It is worth noting that for Radio-Canada and TVA networks, even regional news is often picked up at the national level. Less time wasted, more results.

3. Go long-form

Sending out a press release that will not get picked up can be a waste of time and a source of frustration in many ways. You have news or something to say: make the choice to go social media. More customizable, less bound by editorial standards (especially since X no longer limits posts to 240 characters), social media platforms are great showcases for organizational leaders. We often forget, but saying something on social media means saying something publicly, especially in a context where journalists themselves consult these platforms extensively.

4. Tweet, or X it!

One might have expected X to empty out after the changes pushed by Elon Musk, but not at all. X (formerly Twitter) remains the social network preferred by journalists and politicians. In other words, that is where it all happens! Be careful not to get drawn in by all kinds of comments, but keep in mind that X is the ideal tool for interacting online with our leaders and influencers. If you want to be heard, step into the arena! Start by retweeting, sharing news that interests you, then find your style by posting your organization’s messages. Keep in mind that X is above all a social network made up of individuals, so organizational accounts do not always have the same resonance.

5. Squeeze every drop from your network

Tired of chasing partners, journalists, politicians? Do not forget that your network is your primary relay audience. Everything connects: we mentioned in the introduction that you should repeat your messages in multiple formats, so offer that same possibility to your employees, members and supporters by encouraging them to share your content. It is simple and effective, it just takes a little discipline. Nothing stops you from identifying sharing champions with a strong reach. Your best influencers are often the ones closest to you!
